kdm problem

I installed woody, and then apt-getted to kde 3.2.1. Now, whenevr I select the kde (or any other option) in kdm, all I get is an xterm window. I have to type 'startkde' to get kde running? How can I fix this?

You'd have to edit your startup file and add 'startkde' to it. Not a debian user, but heres a link to the info I think you're looking for

http://www.kde.org/documentation/faq....html#startkde

I find it hard to believe that no one knows the answer to this question. The answer is probably editing a file in /etc/X11, but I don't know which. Come on guys, help. This is a supreme annoyance. I cannot logout fully, only to the xterm. Same with shutting down. There has to be someone able to help...

I had the same "problem" after updating to KDE 3.2.1.
Root-Login works fine, but all users only get konsole.

Simple solution: All users have to explicitly set the Session-Type at the KDE-Login (Menu Button) to KDE (only first login). Then set all preferences and KDE works fine.

First, thanks for the reply. Second, I did try exactly that. My menu has a (previous) next to the KDE item. The root login doesn't work either. Any more ideas?

I've got the exact same problem with KDE 3.2.1 on FreeBSD 5.2.1. With all users, even with root. When I login on the kdm login screen, all I get is an xterm window in the top-left corner. I cannot make the window active, so I cannot type text in it.

All I can do is Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to restart kdm and get the login screen again.

I've got a single line with 'startkde' in my ~/.xsession.

A normal 'startx' does work perfectly fine, with KDE starting up immediately.

znerd, I fixed it by bzipping my entire /etc/X11 dir from my working laptop to this computer. If you want, I can send you a .tar.bz2

Reported bug at KDE site

I've created a bug at the KDE bug site. See:
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=79657

PS. Don't send the gzipped X11 directory. That's a bit too much for me. I want to understand the problem and fix it. If I copy the X11 directory over my current one, I may get in more trouble than I already am :-)

Great, except you got the threadid wrong. It takes me to http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=170141
Check out the comment by Oswald Buddenhagen, he says to check your ~/.dmrc. Mine has:
Code:
[Desktop]
Session=kde
Hope that helps.

my best guess is, that the ports did not update the Xsession script yet. try running "genkdmconf --no-old-scripts".
