kdenlive keeps crashing Suse 11 - many reasons

I've installed kdenlive from the pacman repository. It's behaving so badly it's unusable. A crash will occur every minute or so, instigated by things such as opening projects, importing clips, previewing clips...

KCrash reports "This backtrace appears to be of no use. This is probably because your packages are built in a way which prevents creation of proper backtraces, or the stack frame was seriously corrupted in the crash." It's laying the blame on diverse libraries such as libmlt and libc - but the blame is inconsistent from crash to crash.

All this is under Suse 11, with kde 3.5 and kde 4, and libmlt 0.2.4. What's going on? Debugging is very difficult because the source of the bugs isn't apparent.
