A few days ago I recognized, that on startup KDE 3 there is no more splash screen. I have any idea what I did to cause that.
Images are in the right places (../apps/ksplash/pics).
There are two different directories for ksplash pics. One in my home directory (i created that myself for individuel splash screens) and one for the default screens.
I am using SuSE Linux 8.1 so the default directory is /opt/kde/share/apps/ksplash/pics.
I checked your hint: permissions seem alright. r/w for root, r for others and group, directories are x. Owner is root.

you may want to try changing the permissions for everything to 755 and see if that works. i think for everyone, they need at least read and exec access. but you may want to try 777 for the permissions just as a test. as far as individual splashes go, i've tried that with rh 7.3 on kde 3.1.1 and it didn't work for me. oh well...
