KDe + RefreshRate

I'm using KDE and I'm experiencing something odd. I have manually edited Xconfig to set my monitor at 1280x1024 resolution, but the refresh rate is all screwy. What I mean is, according to KDE, the refresh is set to 73hz. My monitor is the Compaq S900, and I've set it's v and h settings arrpopriately in Xconfig. The problem is that my monitor itself is saying that the current refresh rate is at 60hz, and I believe that because I can see the refresh rate and it's killing me! I have my monitor brightness way down so I can't see the flickering too much, but everything is really dark now. KDE says one thing, but really it is not set to this.
I did some research and looked at some other Xconfig's. Some have a "Modeline" line in the monitor section, mine did not by default. I wonder what I should have for this line. I want to run KDE with 1280x1024 resolution @ 85hz. Little help? Thanks.

In case anyone reads this, it turns out that I had installed the wrong drivers for my video card at install. I mistakenly installed the default Debian selection, which is 'vesa'.

If you are about to install Debian and the xserver-xfree86 package; if you have an nVidia card, choose 'nv' in the driver list, if you have an ATI based card, choose 'ati'.
