KDE panel hangs after KPPP connection

Why does the whole KDE taskbar or panel hangs whenever I KPPP establishes a connection? This did not happen before but I checked all options in the MISC tab at setup expecting that KPPP will automatically shrink to the panel. Unfortunaltely, it didn't and I messed up the whole KDE taskbar or panel. How do I fix this?

i **think** it has to do with modules / versions of KDE installed.

i noticed 3.2.2 is very finiky about that one, but it used to do what you describe for me a while ago.

It has something to do with kdesu (that was an error i got from it), and i think the best way to get around it is ... not run kppp as su (are you doing that?)

asside from that... try updating KDE, but usually updating was what caused it on my systems ...

how do you do that? kppp requires administrative privileges.

no it doesn't ... at least it shouldn't ... the only time i've seen it demand that is if you use the "noauth" switch for pppd.

i suppose setuid would be the way, but i'm not sure ... that might have security implications.

On my system set uid is set. for kppp
chmod 4755 /opt/kde/bin/kppp should do it (which would mirror my settings, which are slackware / kde default.

hold on, backup ... if you don't know what noauth is, then there is no detriment to you, it would appear you don't need it.

Nevertheless, what it is: it's a switch (not a command) for pppd, which tells it that the server you are connecting to does NOt AUTHenticate against you (ie you tell it who you are, but it doesn't tell you who it is). This switch requires privileges to use, and rarely is needed.

Getting back to your problem, i was suggesting that you run kppp as a standard user, and that the only ordinary reason why you'd run it as root, is that you are using privileged options. IF you are not doing so, then all should be fine if you run it as yourself.

This may overcome your problem with the task bar. BUT i also said, odds are you have some stale KDE modules hanging about (and i don't know how to fix that), and they are the cause.
