Right click on the icon, select 'move [whatever] button' and bring it as close to the next icon as you can without them switching spots...
If you are seeking some sort of file, perhaps to modify a value in, good luck. I spent about 1hr just trying to find the side image on the k menu. I suggest getting real friendly with a kde dev.
I know how to do that, but I want them closer than they already are. You might notice in Linspire they are closer, I guess im looking for a config file like you say.
Yeah, thats what I thought. The problem is trying to find this 'file' when you aren't even sure it exists, or if it does, what it might be called. That's why I suggested getting friendly with a dev. I would try kde mailing list or perhaps #kde at freenode.
