I am about to install Linux Mint 8 and Fedora 12 along with Win7 on my Thinkpad T500.
I will mostly be using the following programs:
-Firefox
-Thunderbird
-VLC Player
-Amarok
-Audacity
-Kdenlive
-Avidemux
-OpenOffice
Which desktop should I go with? KDE or Gnome? I used Gnome on Ubuntu so far and I like it. I am just wondering if Kdenlive and Amarok might run more smoothly on KDE?
You can run KDE apps on any system with a GUI Window Manager or Desktop Environment. The only issue is that you have to also install a lot of KDE libraries---handled automatically by the package manager.
You can pretty much choose bewteen Gnome and KDE regardless of what apps you are running. If in doubt, install both and select which to start when booting.
As long as you have the proper libraries installed, they'll all run just fine on either DE. The only thing missing would be a few minor integration functions. Most of the programs you've listed are designed to be desktop (and even OS) agnostic anyway.
