kde menu entries lost

I'm using FC1 and KDE 3.2.2 and was recently upgrading my system. After doing an apt-get upgrade, I couldn't see an apps in the KDE menu anymore! Moreover, KDE does not know how to handle file types anymore. If I doubleclick a jpeg, it doesn't know the corresponding app, which was kuickshow before the upgrade. Then a dialog with all apps appear from where I could pick an app. However, now ZERO apps appear, the dialog is empty.
Ok, I thought I messed up my ~/.kde dir somehow, and I deleted it (before making a copy of course). But nothing changed. After some googling, I figured the entries in the KDE menu are saved in .config/menus/, but this folder is emty now. I deleted it too, but no change. I also read there should be an entry in /var/lib, but I can't find anything. There was only one solution left: uninstall the entire kde and reinstall it, bun no improvement.
I installed several users on my machine, and I get the same behavior with each of them, no matter if its either KDE or Gnome
How can I get my apps (which I can start by console only now) and my KDE menu entries back??

thanks
sepp
