KDE Menu editor won't save changes

I'm using SuSE 9 pro. with KDE 3.1. When I try to edit anything on the KDE menu, using kmenuedit, the changes appear to be made in the editor but don't have any effect on the actual menu!

Also, if I close and reopen the menu edotor, any changes are lost. It also happens that many times I try to move an item to a different place in the menu, that item disapears totally from the menu altogether, ie. it's not in the old or new places, or anywhere else!

I have always found the menu editor temperamental, but now it's so bad that the menu is virtually unusable!
