KDE: Entire desktop freezes when I attempt to open an application

Hello! The title pretty much says it all: any time I try to open an app in kde, the entire desktop crashes. I am able to switch runlevels, though, so that may help us in fixing the problem. I think it could be related to qtcurve somehow. I'd like to try changing gnome's settings from the terminal, but I haven't a clue how.
For those of you interested, this is what I did prior to this problem:
Code:

installed prelink
installed preload
installed and set up directfb and qingy (only runlevels 1-5)
modified my .zshrc  and softlinked root's to mine (this is relavent because I use zsh for both my and root's shell)

If anyone thinks any of these could have caused the problem, please, let me know!
And if anyone else has experienced this before, please do not hesitate to share!
Thanks.
Code:

Netrunner 4.2.1 (Kubuntu 12.04)
KDE SC 4.9.0
Qt 4.8.2
zsh 5.0
qingy 1.0
preload & prelink are whatever version they are in precise

Update

I removed qtcurve entirely and set qingy to start on the sixth runlevel. I am once again able to open apps. I will keep this open for a short while in case more problems arrive.
