KDE Directory Icons

It must be the old age - 60 coming up in September - but I've forgotten how to change all subdirectories below their header directory to the same directory icon.

I'm sure I used to do this in, I think, KDE-2.x in Mandrake.

Actually - it doesn't matter whether the subdirectory (sub-folder) icons are the same as the directory (folder) they're in, just so long as they're the same as each other, and the change can be made while they have contents.

So the desired function is - collect a lot of directories of data (in this case, years of photos) from backups, put then into one main directory - then change the directories the photos are in, to one selected icon type.

If the function isn't now available, can it be done within a directory by using the hidden " .directory " text file?

I did Google it, and did the Search and Similars here, but they don't quite cover this.

Thanks in advance,

Regards, Dave.

If I understand you correctly, you want to change the default icon for say jpg or bmp so that they all look the same? If this is the case you can do it by right clicking on any one, select properties. Where is says Type to the right there should be a little icon, click it and another window pops up, now click the icon image and you'll be taken to the location of all the system icons, simply choose the one you want then click ok, you should then see the message Updating system configuration, click ok again to close the properties window. Hit F5 to refresh and all the icons of the same extension should now look alike.

Nexus - Thanks for the rapid reply.

Actually it wasn't a default for file-type of the icon, but a method that would be specific to any one directory. Like a "setting" or in "properties" for that directory.

So that the icons of any directories placed inside that directory could be changed to the same appearance, whatever their icon file extension.

From your explanation, if all icons in the install were .png or .jpg - apart from the icons of the sub-directories in my main directory for them, which were changed to .bmp, if the .bmp icons had a default, they'd all then be the same...?

I also wondered if the ".directory" hidden file in the main directory could contain script to make all subdirectories placed in that directory use the same icon...

That avoids making it system-wide, and keeps it only to that directory.

Rather like being able to "declare" all subdirectories within a directory, to use the same icon.

Maybe it can't be done that way at present.

Thanks, Dave.

Ah I see what you mean now I've not tried doing anything like that so I don't know if or how it could be done.

I just had a look at some directories that have different folder icons. There's a hidden .directory file in there with this kind of entry
Quote:
[Desktop Entry]
Hidden=true
Icon=document-mdk.png
Maybe some kind of script that would copy that file to all sub-directories created in that main folder would do the trick.

Lol, I've just read your post again and realised I've just echoed what you've already pondered.
