I'm trying to wipe out a slackware install and put on Simply Mepis.
It works fine up until right after I log in. Whether I log is as root or as demo, it doesn't matter. After a while, it gives up and gives me a message about KDE not being loaded.
Distribution: Debian, after testing all the others!

Did you format the partition or just overwritten it?
Try to make a new user - adduser <username>
- passwd <username>
Finally, ever tried Debian? It's a very nice and rock-stable distro...
