KDE buggy on Fedora Core 3
 

Has anyone noticed that KDE tends to create hanging applications more than GNOME. KDE's find files system always freezes no matter what search. Konqueror sometimes receives a sigsegv signal and terminates. Is there a solution to this problem?

Thats not really KDE's fault or bug, it's to do with the distros, Fedora is very biased towards GNOME, so it's GNOME desktop tends to be more fine tuned than their version of KDE, which I think is primarily packaged by volunteers. Same for Mandrake, their implementation of KDE also has this problem, but thats also due to the way they configure KDE. I have used KDE on Slack, Knoppix and Yoper and the problems with the find utility are non-existant, but on Mandrake it seems to happen with every release.

Fedora is actually Red Hat. Red hat always chose Gnome for some reason. KDE is damn unstable here, but it's worth it. FC3 is the fastest distro I've tried.

It's probably best to choose a distro whose default desktop is KDE, or just to compile KDE from the source. :)

I have decided that GNOME doesn't quite fit my needs. I used it with Fedora 2, but in Fedora 3 they did something weird with the interface and some config tools aren't there anymore. Also it doesn't provide the centralized control panel like in KDE.

I want to compile KDE from source but I don't know how, any hints or suggestions or precautions?

It's quite easy to compile KDE from source, just go to the KDE website download the version you need, but also make sure you check the site for any dependencies you may require for KDE to install or run smoothly. You need to compile arts first, then kdelibs, then kdebase and then just install additional options in any order, but remember that kde-addons has to be compiled last. Also make sure you watch the results of each ./configure process because you may get useful inflrmation about missing stuff etc and how to rectify the problem if any features you need are disabled. The good thing about installing KDE is that the ./configure process points you to possible download sites for missing libraries etc.

I installed the new Fedora RPMs first. It only partially solved the Kfind bugs. Then I tried to compile from source, which returned kfind to its original state, buggy and crashy. It also takes 3 hours to compile one package! Am I doing anything wrong?

So far this compile from source thing is not working for me. ITs actually making my computer worse instead of better. Shouldn't compiling from source fix all my problems since it seems to work fine on other distros? I can only compile two packages everyday and then i have to shut down my computer. Is this okay to do?
