KDE and XMMS
 

Hello all,

I've been using AfterStep for years and really like it. Unfortuately, the NVidia driver and/or the new kernel for RH7.3 does not get along with AfterStep and freezes up the screen and keyboard. I can still ssh into the box to kill off the server, but it renders the console useless. Anyway...

So, I've been playing with KDE for today. KDE has a sound for every action that can be, I believe, or so it seems. This keeps XMMS from being able to play anything. When I do "Disable all sounds" in the KDE control panel, XMMS works, when I "Enable all sounds" XMMS doesn't work. Has anyone come across which action or group of actions sound(s) keep XMMS from playing?

well yes, if you don't tell xmms to use the same sound output as kde then it will. by default xmms and most sound applications will just try to directly write the data to /dev/dsp or such like, which can only be accessed by one process at one time. by using a sound server like kde or arts this server can accept multiple sounds as once and put them through to the sound driver just fine. use the arts output.

I have a similar problem, but the other way around: XMMS works when I set it to use the OSS output plugin, but when I use the aRTs plugin it just freezes. So the easy answer seems to be: "just use the OSS plugin", but then I have another problem:
XMMS won't play until I shut down the aRTs server (manually using artsshell, or waiting 60 sec for it to do it on its own).

Is there some easy way to tell all applications to use aRTs (I'm trying to use gnomemeeting, and it says it can't write to /dev/sound/dsp, which I'm guessing is due to aRTs using the same device).

What is aRTs actually for? Enables me to share the /dev/sound/dsp device between processes?
