Arrow KDE 4.1.0 'Could not start kstartupconfig4. Check your installation'

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Hello everyone.

I have just installed the KDE 4.1.0 packages on top of my Slackware Linux v12.1 (which had KDE 3.5). The update was successful, but when I try to run x (i.e. 'startx'), I get the following error: 'Could not start kstartupconfig4. Check your installation'

Could anyone suggest how I can fix it? thank you in advance

I've never seen that error message under KDE but I have seen it under KDE 3. The circumstances where when a user's home directory failed to mount from a remote server so the user was trying to log in without a home directory. Is your home directory writeable by you? Is there space on the partition your home directory is on?

Yes there is. My /usr is writeable and there is enough space on the hard drive

How is /usr relevant? It shouldn't be writeable by anyone by root. Unless you have some unusual set up home directories live in /home
