KDE 3 and memory

hi there.
I'm use RedHat 7.3 and KDE 3.0 on Athlon 1,47 Ghz with 256 ram
From the beginning KDE is running OK. After using KDE for 20-30 minutes it's start to get sooooooo slow because there is almost no free memory (from 1 to 3 mb usually. right after start it's about 150 mb free) Is there a way to fix it? Why KDE progs doesn't release memory?

Thats normal most of it is cached - mine uses 300 mb

As to being slow after a while:
I have the same problem with konqueror as a filemanager.After a while of after moving around a couple of gig's that thing just gets buttslow or dies completly - depending on the version of konq and the distro.
I tried to find out for some time what could be resposible for that but nobody seems to have the slightest idea.

the problem is not that it use 95% of memory (of which of course about 75% is cashed) the problem is that after allocating almost all memory it takes a lot of time (from 30 to 3-4 minutes) to start a program.
