KDE 3.4.1 System Sound does not work

I have just upgraded from KDE 3.3 to KDE 3.4.1. (on SuSE 9.2, using the appropriate RPMs from the KDE website) Now the following problem occurs:

There are no system sounds, although they are enabled in the control centre. I can play sound files, and this works well, and if I test the sound system in the control centre, it works.

But if any event occurs that should trigger a sound, there is nothing, and if I press the play button on the system notification page of the control centre, nothing happens.

My file knotifyrc looks thus:

[Misc]
External player=noatun
LastConfiguredApp=KDE System Notifications
Use external player=false
Volume=92

[StartProgress]
Arts Init=true
KNotify Init=true
Use Arts=true

I have tried to rename the .kde file in my home directory and restarted kde, but even then I cannot get system sounds to work. (So I am using my old configuration again.)

I have also created a new user, and for the new user the system sounds do not work, while other sounds (playing sound files etc) do work.

I am now getting very bored of the silent computer, so I would appreciate greatly if someone has got an idea as to what I need to do.

Question

what sound driver are you using ? try using ALSA or OSS driver for default driver . These drivers are less error prone !

Check out this thread:

You may need to go forward or backward to find the exact thing you're looking for. I believe this is a known issue that crops up a lot between KDE upgrades.

Thanks!

Many thanks to ithawtewrong and thandermax!

Thandermax's link showed me the way to the simple solution (simple if one knows about it, otherwise impossible), and now it all works fine. So thanks again.
