Angry KDE 3.2 sound trouble

I've installed KDE 3.2 stable and I have this ** very** annoying limitation - Sound volume can ONLY be changed through KMix. All the volume knobs in XMMS, Xine ,Mplayer ,etc won't work. Apparently it's a feature as it reads in Control Center:

' The KDE sound system takes exclusive control over your audio hardware , blocking programs that may wish to use it directly. If the KDE sound system sits idle it can give up this exclusive control '
And then an option is offered:
Auto-suspend if idle more than x seconds

Now if I won't set the Auto-suspend to 1 second or more I won't get any sound at all other than the system notifications. Killing aRts or rolling back to an older version doesn't change this. Has anyone installed KDE 3.2 and found otherwise or fixed that ?
