kde 3.1 opinions

i was wondring how you all like kde 3.1 if your running it? is it fast slow what. any opinions would be appriciated. the release of official RH 8.0 packages is planned for February, 15th. will this be offered as a system update, if not does someone have any tips on updating kde (i have never done something like this before). im not even sure where to start to be honest (other than the directions on the kde.org site) im running redhat 8.0 kde version 3.0.3-8

thanks for any input,
AD

I upgraded my Redhat 8.0 box to KDE 3.1. KDE 3.1 rocks! Everything is laid out more logically, Konqueror has tabbed browsing and starts in a flash, overall speed is dramatically improved.
I upgraded using apt for redhat. Google for apt for Redhat and then something like KDE 3.1 apt redhat 8 and all will be well. Read this article before you ask any mor equestions about apt for Redhat

hey thanks for the input and advise. i did the software install of apt-get and i updated my kde but its saying that its 3.0.5a-1 now not 3.1xx like i thought it would now im confused. if i try "apt-get install kde3.1" it says there is no package with this name. so im figuring that its not classified as a stable package. would someone be kind enough to hold my hand and tell me where they found there 3.1 using apt get. i appended multiple sites to my /etc/apt/sources.list with no luck.

Thanks,
AD

OK, I'm in the mood to help even one of my other questions on this forum is being picked apart by a pedantic asshole instead of helping me (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=44706 ).
Check this out: I Googled for "apt redhat 8.0 kde 3.1." First result I got back was this:http://kde-redhat.sourceforge.net/
Went to that site. Read down and saw this:
### RedHat 8.0
## Stable packages
rpm ftp://apt.unl.edu/apt/ 8.0 kde3 kde3-extras
## Unstable/test packages
#rpm ftp://apt.unl.edu/apt/ 8.0 kde3-test

Noticed this above the packages listing this:
kde3-test contains packages undergoing testing, currently KDE 3.1
That told me that #rpm ftp://apt.unl.edu/apt/ 8.0 kde3-test
is the entry I want to put in my /etc/apt/sources.list
Fired up a command prompt or shell and became root. Opened up /etc/apt/sources.list and added below the Redhat 8.0 packages listing rpm ftp://apt.unl.edu/apt/ 8.0 kde3-test
Notice I removed the #. If you have one of these in front of any scripts or line, your system will ignore it and not run it. Then run apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, and finally apt-get dist-upgrade. You could run Synaptic and upgrade from there but I recommend the above method for upgrades like this
Here's what my /etc/apt/sources.list looks like:

# Red Hat Linux 8.0
rpm http://apt.freshrpms.net redhat/8.0/en/i386 os updates freshrpms
rpm-src http://apt.freshrpms.net redhat/8.0/en/i386 os updates freshrpms
rpm ftp://apt.unl.edu/apt/ 8.0 kde3-test

Let me know how this works out. I had a couple of problems w/ kde-laptop packages but all is resolved now.

No worries. Let me know when you get KDE 3.1 up and running. If you run through this tutorial, you'll really get a lot more out of KDE and Konqueror.

I got the same errors and another about the checksum on one of te packages. Try running Synaptic and fix broken packages from it, then run update and then run upgrade, dist-upgrade from Synaptic. I think their server is getting hammered. It tokk me 3 or 4 attempts to get everything.

Also, try fixing broken packages in Synaptic and then running apt-get install kdebase from command line.

I could not find these updates on kde.org or redhat.com. Does anyone know where to find them?
