Hi, quick newbie question...

I have ddl KDE 3.0 package version for SUSE 7.3 Pro, installed using YAST, but how do I make KDE 3.0 appear on the login screen of X?

Cheers

KDE 3.0

Hi.

If you have downloaded all the packages and kde3.0 libs you should have overwritten the 2.x or what ever version you had before it, and should automatically appear in the GUI dropdown list in X. If not, you most likely have'nt installed everything correctly.

KDE 3.0

The SuSE 7.3 RPM packages by default install to a different location to KDE 2.x.

The path which they are located is :

/opt/KDE3

Other suggestion greatly appreciated

kde 3.0 doesn't overwrite 2.2.

at the command line enter WINDOWMANAGER=kde3

or add

WINDOWMANAGER=kde3
export WINDOWMANAGER

to your .profile file.

Re: KDE 3.0 - X-Window Manager

installed SUSE 7.0 professional, it comes with KDE as window manager, personally i enjoy better gnome.
question: can i have'em both, on my system and use gnome as well.
if so, HOW?

If you put the WINDOWMANAGER lines into .profile you wont be able to log into any other window managers and other users will need the lines in their .profile in order to use KDE3, but You can get kde3 into the window manager options at logon by doing the following...

well first install all the KDE3 packages then
click the K menu,
open control center,
click system,
then Login manager,
click root and supply the password,
click the session tab,
and in the field 'new type' under 'session types' type kde3,
then click add new.

On my system this could not be done from KDE3, I have to login to KDE2 in order to make changes to the XDM.

And mcujino If you dont have GNOME, use YAST2 to install it from your SuSE CD-ROM or downloaded RPMs and you can do the above for gnome.

as you said

installed gnome form the suse cds and the version was old and the system hanged when shutting down, next step downloaded the new gnome (can't remember the version now) installed as they suggest and VOILA!!! things are still the same.
question: If the gnome has appearently been successfully how do i open it? ut does't appear as an option when the kde menu login appears. thanks again pals
