Kazaa Lite and RH9

I am getting the following error message when installing Kazaa Lite:

Internal Error:

Failed to expand shell folder constant "userappdata".

The install actually launches but towards the end, I get this message. I feel I am so close to getting this to work. I have searched the net about this error, but to no avail. Anyone have any ideas?

Im sure you are using WINE. There are better programs than WINE like Win4lin or VMware.

Use eDonkey. It can access Kazaa and many other P2P users.

I have instructions on how to install kazaalite thru wine in linux on my guide, you need certain dll files.
Even so, I haven't talked to anyone yet who has gotten it to work in red hat 9. I have used it in red hat 8 and red hat 7.3 currently.
The link to my guide is below in my sig.
Let me know if you get it working in rh 9, you would be the first that I would know of.
Electro is right about alternatives but it all depends on what you want to have access to. Kazaalite has the largest database for mp3's that I have ever seen and the downloads are quick.
Edonkey or Lmule are good for dvd screeners and divx and xvid movies, although for older movies and cams, kazaalite is better.
Don't use kazaalite to get software either, it is mostly crap and sometimes contains viruses, good thing you are using linux.

If you have any more questions, you can email me - my email is on my guide page.

The link to my guide is below in my sig.
Good luck!

Re: Kazaa Lite

First and foremost, thanks Electro for introducing me to eDonkey. I was able to install that, but it seems to have port issues while connecting (Cable Modem). I have been reading the documentation it forwarded me to, so hopefully I can get that resolved shortly.

Yowwww, thanks for forwarding me the instructions to installing Kazaa Lite. I followed everything perfectly and the install went great, with no problems. It created the directory and even the shortcuts, which is farther than I got the last time I tried, hehe. Once thing though that is happeneing, when I launch Kazaa, I get the message:

"Failed to create empty document"

From that message, Kazaa will come up for 5 seconds, and then close. I get no other message.

I am running:
Redhat 9.0
Wine 20030508
KaZaA Lite Version 2.1.0 [k++ v2.0.3 Edition] Build 3

Any additional information that might be helpful for me to let you know to resolve this issue, please let me know.

Wine and Kazaa Lite

Well, I'm running redhat 9, I got wine installed properly. I've been trying to run kazaa lite for a few days to no avail. 1st I tried with the latest version 2.1 and I kept getting "failed to create empty document" after installing. I used this online guide:
http://home.wanadoo.nl/raschouten/
It would not work so then I tried kazaa lite version 2.0 and it installed fine. I got kazaa lite running but now it will not connect. Has anyone had problems connecting and solved them? I'm almost there If I could only connect. It just says connecting.....

Finally Got it Working RH9 + Kazaa

Okay after 2 days of fusteration I finally got it. Im running redhat 9.0, wine version 20030508 (tar from wine hq), and kazaa lite 2.0.0b2. I couldn't get version 2.1 running. (But you know I'll keep trying). I followed instructions from (as mentioned in the previous message):
http://home.wanadoo.nl/raschouten/
I tried every possible combo of dlls and finally went back to the original config:
[AppDefaults\\kazaa.exe\\DllOverrides]
"commctrl" = "native"
"comctl32" = "native"
"comdlg32" = "native"
"msvcrt" = "native"
"shdoclc" = "native"
"shdocvw" = "native"
"shlwapi" = "native"
"urlmon" = "native"
"wininet" = "native"

The only thing I did this time was skip the part about using the new wine registery file. There is this link to download it then you are supposed to extract it in your fake windows directory. I did it the 1st time I ran kazaa lite to no avail. I decided to skip it this time and it worked fine. Hope this helps someone. Now I have to get windows media player working. Anyone know how to do that?

bentonj 05-25-2003 06:01 PM

I did the same as above, but am getting an exception right after Kazaa loads. Anyone get this and work around it?

linux_pioneer 05-25-2003 06:44 PM

Benoitj,
What kind of exception are you getting? Read what it is saying in the terminal window. Are you running this as root or a user? Reason I'm asking is because I installed as root then could not run as a user until I set persmissions on some particular files. Also are you using kazaa lite 2.1 or 2.0. I couldn't get 2.1 to work right so I'm using 2.0.

http://gift.sourceforge.net/

FYI, (I'm plastering the board with this one for a while, no more dcgui :D ):
http://gift.sourceforge.net/
The cvs version has a module that one can use to get on the kazaa network. This means no more bs wine! Woohoo!

Cool

bentonj 05-25-2003 07:38 PM

On both 1.7.2 and 2.0.0 build 2, at the end of each run i get:

fixme:hook:NotifyWinEvent (32769,0x40038,-4,6)-stub!
fixme:hook:NotifyWinEvent (32768,0x40038,-4,1)-stub!
fixme:hook:NotifyWinEvent (32769,0x20023,-4,10)-stub!
fixme:hook:NotifyWinEvent (32768,0x20023,-4,1)-stub!
fixme:ole:CoRegisterMessageFilter stub
fixme:hook:NotifyWinEvent (32780,0x3003f,-4,1)-stub!
wine: Unhandled exception, starting debugger...

The dialog box that pops up has the title "Exception Raised" and says:

Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address 0x004ffd0a.
Do you wish to debug it?

I'm running as root. I went as far as to install wine and Kazaa (using configure --with-nptl && make depend && make) as root. I get the same error no matter what user is running the program.

Mystic_Places: according to my guide you can see that I used different versions that you did. My version of kazaalite and wine were different and they worked fine. Did you make sure you got the dll's from a machine pre-2000/xp? I got mine from a 98 install. Having said all that even when things are done exactly the same way, it might produce a different result. Which leads to me what I have been hearing about red hat 9 for a long time.....

I've heard that there is something conflicting with the way rh 9 is and wine. The closest I got to getting it working was seeing kazaalite come on the screen and then it didn't connect.

I didn't have rh 9 installed very long on my backup system to keep trying it though so I just tabled it for another time. I had no problems whatsoever getting kazaalite to work in 7.3 or 8.0 (except r h 8 wasn't very good in my opinion as a distro which is why I switched to 7.3)

So, has anyone got kazaalite fully working in r h 9 and if so, what method did they use? I read all the posts and some of the say it got working, but it was not clear how or whether it was fully working or not.

macewan 05-25-2003 09:15 PM

use limewire instead

http://www.deadmule.com/macewan/java...n_redhat8.html

MasterC 05-25-2003 09:23 PM

Really? You'd take Limey over Kazaa? Wow, well I guess to each their own ;)

You check out giFT macewan? Apparently they've added kazaa network's support to their application :eek:

Cool

bentonj 05-25-2003 09:31 PM

troubles with giFT.

I tried your suggestion of giFT, but am getting errors with the cvs version on the first few steps of configuration as described the installation guide.

[bentonj@sikozu giFT]# ./autogen.sh
Running aclocal...
Running autoheader...
Running autoconf...
Running libtoolize --automake...
Running automake...
configure.ac:672: required file `lib/giftconfig.h.in' not found
Running ./configure ...
configure: error: cannot find sources (src/giftd.h) in . or ..

I read the guide carefully and made sure I have up-to-date versions of libtool, automake and autoconf.

:confused:

benoitj,

Do you have wine installed properly? That is your 1st step.
download wine source from:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/w...ar.gz?download
Do not download the rpm version, it will be a tar.
if you have an rpm version installed, unistall it with:
rpm -qa | grep WINE
rpm -qa | grep wine
rpm -e "the output you got from running the last command"
extract into a directory such as /opt. go into the directory run:
./configure
make depend
make
make install

Next you need to create your fake windows folders inside the wine directory:
Program Files
windows/system

give all users persmissions to Program Files
copy the "config" file to ~/.wine, edit this part:
[Drive C]
"Path" = "/c"
"Type" = "hd"
"Label" = "MS-DOS"
"Filesystem" = "win95"
replace "/c" with the path to wine such as "/opt/wine/"

Next run 'wine -v' and you should get:
20030805

After you get wine installed on there use this tutorial to get kazaa lite 2.0 installed:
http://home.wanadoo.nl/raschouten/
