Kazaa and Linux?
 

Does Kazaa work with wine under Linux?

Download Kazaa Lite 1.7 (2.* won't work). Then download the required dll's (get windows 98 ones). Then install wine.

Then download the default reg file from wine's homepage, and do the following command:

#regedit-wine winedefault.reg

Here. This website was a great website. But it seems something happened and now it looks crap, this link has couple of links that i think has zipped dll's for you. I haven't tried this. but you can do it. Also This is the Kazaa 2 version. So good luck and let me know if it works.

Where is the address of the website you are talking about? If you mean the one from your first post i didn't find anything there.

Kazaa 2.02 build5 with linux
 

Check it out. I've slaved away many times to get Linux to work with Kazaa perfectly. I wanted a version that at least had the user rating thing for faster downloads. So I screwed around getting 2.02 to work. Well I started off with 2.02 build 5 because that's the last release to have autosearchmore.exe So I used dlls from a win98se install cd [for pc's without windows, which mine is : ) ] and I had sucess. Autosearchmore.exe worked perfectly with it. I think it even makes kazaa switch usernodes every now and again, but I can't confirm that. But the menu's were clickable, but clciking on anything on the menu would bring wine down. I pinpointed urlmon.dll as what was controling this(or at least effecting it) and some other window behavior. I switched the win98se urlmon with the winxp urlmon(at the time I had it on my comp...it was free...so shoot me!) I had on me at the time and boom. It worked amazingly. Menus work(mainly) and the skins even work(sorta) now! I think it's great progress...and I tried to get the dude ay frankscorner.org to post all this, but all he did was give links to my config files and dlls, not my summary on it. So you got the summary, go to http://home.cinci.rr.com/jiminy/config.zip to get the config files and http://home.cinci.rr.com/jiminy/dlls.zip to get the proper dlls(all in one package!). Now, make sure to look at the config file included in the config.zip. It has /mnt/windows as the default X drive and /usr/share/wine-c as the default c drive. It also has some kazaa specific dll overrides that have worked for EVERYBODY. So use and enjoy. I suggest typing nice --13 in before your wine command, makes it work the best

Thanks guys your help is really appreciated. I'll try to install kazaa now. One more question though : I went to download wine from winehq and apart from the official wine there is winex. Would kazaa work with winex or it is only for games. I'd like to try some other games on linux apart from UT so if kazaa does not work with winex is it possible to have both wine versions installed?

Theoretically, you could get kazaa to work with winex since it's just a version of wine with special dll's(and a few other things) thrown in. But I have never had success. Why? Well I use the winex game manager form www.frankscorner.org (which works great), but it makes a special registry and wine config for everything you install. For some reason, kazaa doesn't work with the combination of config and the windows reg. I've tried switching the config WGM makes with my wine config and the reg with the working wine reg I have, and bumpkiss. Nuttin. NA-DA. Word brotha man. If anyone has any suggestions I'm open to them. The one thing I also never quite understood, when you use the Game Manager, you're supposted to change the startup script to an edited one after deleting the root/.transgaming folder and all of it's contents. Well I did that, installed the startup script, and when i ran winex again, it created the damn transgaming folder again with the same contents. I know I'm doing somehting wrong, but I know not what.
