K3B will not burn; preferences dialog crashes

I just installed k3b, and it refuses to recognize my CD writer. It gives no warning on startup, but when I try to burn, it tells me that I can only create an image because there is no recorder available. If I try and go into the preferences dialog, K3B crashes.

Everything works fine if I run it as root, so I know the device is supported and working. I can burn CDs this way, but I would prefer that root privileges were not necessary; I want to let other users burn CDs.

I installed cdrdao and cdrecord. Both are owned by root:cdrom, both are suid, and both are executable by their group. My burning device is /dev/hdc, and it is owned by root:cdrom and it is writable by group. I am certain that the users with which I want to burn are in the cdrom group.

Note: I am not using SCSI emulation to burn discs. I am using the newer ATAPI burning support. This approach has worked for me in the past, and I would prefer not to go back to emulation.

Version numbers:
Kernel: 2.6.8
KDE: 3.3.0
Qt: 3.3.3
K3B: 0.11.12
cdrdao: 1.1.9
cdrecord: 2.01a34

I'm using the Testing branch of Debian Linux. Thank you for any help.

Do not use Kernel 2.6.8

A patch that was introduced into the kernel shortly before the 2.6.8 release makes K3b and also the dvd+rw-tools unusable on Linux (unless run as root but that is not recommended). The very important GET CONFIGURATION MMC command is rejected by the kernel for reasons I cannot see and writing commands like MODE SELECT also fail (K3b cannot detect CD writers without it) even when the device is opened O_RDWR. Until this issue has been solved I strongly recommend to stick to kernel version 2.6.7.

Update: The kernel guys are currently fixing the problem so the next kernel release should work again.

Update 2: The problem is NOT fixed in 2.6.8.1

Update 3: Be aware that kernel 2.6.8 also contains the memory leak which makes it impossible to write audio cds, even as root.

* Linux Kernel 2.6.8 broke CD-Writing:
I had several reports that the last 2.6.x kernel broke CD-Writing using the ATAPI driver. Don't update if you want to continue to use X-CD-Roast, or switch back to SCSI-emulation.
