K3b problems when recording DVD's: no disc inserted

i'm trying to record a data DVD-R with K3b, but it doesn't detect the blank DVD-R that i've inserted into the drive. if i go to the disc information option all i get is a "No disc Inserted" message...

when i run the command:

$ dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/cdrom
INQUIRY: [TOSHIBA ][DVD-ROM SD-R6112][1332]
GET [CURRENT] CONFIGURATION:
:-( no media mounted, exiting...

though there is a blank DVD-R in the drive. my Toshiba drive is listed in dvd+rw tools site as beeing supported, and K3b lists it as a DVD-R(W) writer drive, which is correct. i've managed to write a couple of dvd's in XP, so i know my drive works fine

K3b works fine with CD-R(W). only with DVDs it fails to work properly...i can't even force writting, because it will always complain that the DVD drive is empty, when it isn't...

any help is welcome, just for the record, i'm using Mandrake 10 OE, with 2.6.3 Kernel and k3b 0.11.16. if can't resolve this, i'll have to reinstall the lousy windows in my machine

I'm having this exact same problem with my DVD writer..

TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SDR6112F is the dvdrw installed in my laptop...

I get these messages dumped in /var/log/messages when I insert an empty dvd media (it recognizes blank cdrs, and any actual dvd just fine, all works under windows as original poster stated, so I know the drive is fine):

Code:
Sep 20 18:52:38 fuji kernel: hdc: packet command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Sep 20 18:52:38 fuji kernel: hdc: packet command error: error=0x30
Sep 20 18:52:38 fuji kernel: ATAPI device hdc:
Sep 20 18:52:38 fuji kernel: Error: Medium error -- (Sense key=0x03)
Sep 20 18:52:38 fuji kernel: (reserved error code) -- (asc=0x57, ascq=0x00)
Sep 20 18:52:38 fuji kernel: The failed "Read Cd/Dvd Capacity" packet command was:
Sep 20 18:52:38 fuji kernel: "25 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 "
I really hope I don't have to resort to reinstalling windows...

You may have to unmount your recorder drive before burning a DVD with K3B...
but I am not sure.

do you mean running the umount command? but the disc isn't mounted at all...
or you are saying that i should remove my drive from laptop a put it back in there?
dunno if that does anything good...

No matter what I do, the kernel (I presume) tells me that the image is not a valid blank dvd media. Even when the drive is unmounted, growisofs tells me the media is not a valid blank dvd media (but it is, it's the same media I used under windows with this same machine).

I'm also using SuSE 9.1 BTW, if this helps any.. I'd really like to be able to burn dvds under linux.. Thanks in advance

... then I would recommend you downloading the newest version of K3B ( http://www.k3b.org/ - they have rpms for Suse) and installing it. It worked for me (I am using Suse 9.1 pro). With the previous version of K3B I ahd to unmount the drive first (unmount... or right click on the drive in My Computer and choose unmount, but you might have to be root to do that).

Getting the RPMs installed have been ridiculous. I only went from 0.11.12 to 0.11.14 due to stupid dependencies in the other SuSE rpms (they are for 8.2 and 9.0, but none for 9.1)..

I am still getting the same error:
Code:
fuji:/home/njaguar/rpms # growisofs -Z /dev/hdc /tmp/kde-njaguar/K3b data project.iso
:-( /dev/hdc: media is not recognized as recordable DVD: 0
How are you able to burn a dvdr image to a blank dvdr? It does not seem possible...

i've already updated k3b, but still got the same error...anyway since k3b is just a front end i don't know how much effective can be the update.

What do you mean it doesnt seem possible? There is an option Tools -> DVD -> Burn DVD Iso image if it is what you were looking for. And by the way, someone mentioned that K3D is a frontend. This is very true. Maybe your problem is that cdrecord and dvd-cd-tools must be updated. Here is what I am using
Cdrecord-Clone-dvd 2.01a27 (i686-suse-linux) Copyright (C) 1995-2004 Jörg Schilling
dvd+rw-tools 5.20.4.10.8-0 (Packman packager)
K3b: 0.11.15 (Suse91 rpm)

Here are some links just in case:

Upgraded all of the above to the latest versions, still same exact error:
dev/hdc: media is not recognized as recordable DVD: 0

<sigh>

I have automount off (I think, except that it still tries to scan the blank cd when I first insert it..), the dvd drive is definitely unmounted, however..

Anyone know how to turn off (completely) the autoscan/automount stuff in SuSE 9.1?

I think some DVD roms can read only + or - or +/- formats of dvds. You might need to check what type of format your dvd rom supports and try with the correct format of dvdr. Let me know if that fixes your problem

sti2envy:
I came to this same conclusion earlier in the day yesterday and went out and purchased some DVD-R media (as opposed to DVD+R).

I insert the DVD-R into my dvd-rw, and immediately it's recognized as a blank dvdr, and asks if I want to open it in k3b.

I did burn one coaster by trying to do it manually with growisofs, as it said the 4.3gb image was too large?! and continued to burn the TOC anyway! WTH!

I tried with k3b, only to have it keep reporting it couldn't change the write speed from 2100->2712 (or something like that). I set it to "ignore" and it worked! It burned my files (I used the files instead of the iso I created), and low and behold, my first dvd, video dvd even! Worked flawlessly in my home dvd player (which is a 1st gen player!) It burned it at a paltry 1x speed instead of 4x that this drive supports, but at least it worked.. One hurdle at a time..

Anyway, just wanted to share this with everyone, because it WAS the media afterall that apparently isn't supported on this drive.

Thanks to all who helped and gave insight

glad to hear that you got it working njaguar

i also got it working now...that is, i didn't do anything...i picked another dvd disk, from the same box as the one i've trying to use so far, guess what??? it worked! go figure...then to test i puted in the drive other dvds from the same box, they were all recognized as blank dvds! i wonder what was the problem with the first one, it was empty i know that!

anyway i got that "change speed" error also, and also put the speed to ignore and managed to record my first dvd under linux
now i have a 100% functional linux system on my laptop! i'm so happy!!!

I burned my second dvd-r today I'll have to try some of my other dvd+rs and see if any of those work.

I wish the speed would work correctly, instead of paltry 1x..
