K3B freezing when starting burn process
 

Hi There,

I'm a newbee to Linux and am having real problems with K3B.

K3B starts fine and allows me to make my selections etc. As soon as I start the burn process, K3B freezes solid. However in the background the burn process is working fine, because eventually the CD ejects and is written to perfectly. K3B remains forzen until I reboot or kill its process from a console.

My humble understanding here is that maybe once K3B has handed over to CDRecord, CDRecord does the business in the background, but K3B gets itself wrapped in a knot.

I've tried upgrading K3B but without success, mainly due to it not finding the x86_64 libraries it needs (even though they are there). I've tried installing a new binary version of K3B ( 0.11.6 ), but it didnt work at all, I get something about a server error 502 in /var/log/messages

My setup is;

SUSE 9.0 (x86_64)
AMD Athlon 3200+
Gigabyte GA-K8N
GeForce FX5200
1GB Ram
160GB HDD (EIDE)
Lite-On DVDRW LDW-451S

my K3B and CDRecord versions are;

K3B 0.9.cvs20030901-31
cdrecord 2.01a18-27

I would greatly appreciate any advice,

Try using k3b 0.11.9. That's what I'm using with KDE 3.2.2 and it works like a charm for me.

many thanks, I've thought about upgrading KDE and have all the RPM's downloaded, but for a newbie like me, its a very scarey prospect.

do you have any tips on upgrading KDE. The RPM system seems a bit complex, especially as it seems to not automatically resolve dependancies.

There is also the issue that because I'm running an x86_64, many apps dont correctly recognise the arch and thus cant find the libraries as they are not looking in the correct directories.

Does Suse come with a package directory on it's main site? You could also do a google search to find a kde-3.2 package made for Suse that you could use. Try looking for sites that have all the packages you need for kde and suse.

To resolve dependences you should try to use yum ( you have to get it from web because It's not included in SuSE ). It's similar to RPM but It's easier to use ( resolve automatically the dependences ). However It's better to learn even RPM.

Hi Guys,

I took your advice and found a site with all the RPM's in one directory, and a small script for sorting them out. And IT WORKED !!

I now have KDE 3.2.1 ( thats the latest version I could find pre-compiled for x86_64 ).

I also installed a binary version of K3B 0.11.6 and that works as well.

I will certainly take a look at yum and Apt-get, as I still have a nervous feeling about RPM's

You're welcome, Ian. Glad you have it working now. Apt-get is great because if you have a sources.list with repositories from many different sources, then you can usually get all dependencies installed when you install a new program. That saves you from having to hunt all over to find the files yourself that a program needs.
