k3b as user under kernel 2.6.9
 

has anyone been able to burn mp3 cds in k3b as anormal user under kernel 2.6.9 ive read a million things on it bvut cant seem to get it to work.

I have experienced the same problem. My "fix" was to run it using KDESU i.e. as root but from my user area. I suspect the same thing can be achieved using "sudo". Give it a try and see if this allows you to burn CDs. I cannot see that there is too much of a risk by running this one application as root. Jan

oh it runs fine as root, id just rather run it as user, gues si'll have to wait till they fix it

OK. It looks like its a problem with permissions as we both seem to be having the exact same symptoms. Have you tried creating a "burning" group and does that solve your problem? - it did not solve mine but it will be worth trying in an attempt to identify the actual problem.

no that snot it, its in the kernel. I think the only way to fix it is edit the source code or patch it so im just gonna wait till the next kernel version and hope they fix it.

You may well be right - but how do you know that it is a kernel problem? If the software works as root (which is using the same kernel) then the kernel would appear to be OK. The only difference between root and users is usually permissions. As I say, you may well be correct but I would be interested in knowing how you can tell - I'm a bit of a newbie and keen to learn!

So we were both right. The problem seems to lie in kernel 2.6.9 and is related to permissions (SUID etc). However, whether this is a bug or simply a feature of the new kernel I'm not quite sure. I am upgrading to Fedora core 3, which has the same kernel and I will let you know if it changes anything - it shouldn't but I will keep hoping that it will. Jan

it works fine in fedora core 3, probably a patch they added, i dont think that the kernel developers did this on purpose although i could be wrong, but hopefully it will be fixed in the next kernel version and if not k3b's website says they will auto configure cdrecord to work.
