Question JUST DITcHED WIN!@#$

Hello , its the first time in my life but i have taken a rather radical decision and ditch windows, I am sick and tired of it n it corruption bla bla bla , well now i have some questions and problems please answer me in detail i have considerable linux experience [you may draw the line between me and a newbie that i have sucessfully compiled a kernel & I am using it. i have PCLINUX os
have tried Redhat 7.3 , Mandrake 8.0 ,. Suse 9.2 and UBUNTU 5.10 , Gnoppix , MEPIS , Arch linux
1) I have wine but it doesnot run any executible file of windows (even those files which i was successfullly ran on suse 9.2)
(i downloaded wine via apt-get)
2) Sometimes when i halt/ reboot my pc, it hangs at the black screen showing STOPPING DM --usually it shows ok and moves on on terminating and closing etc ohter things but sometimes literally pc HANGS , how and why ? it happens virtually 1 out of 8 halts/reboots (i halt from the quick run dialog in KDE or in from a terminal
--since this happend onlly with pclinux is it its bug or someting?

3) I had a rare programme that could convert DVDs to MPEG or AVI files is there a linux programme (i could not find)
4) I have dialup and so i install some programmes from suse9.2 dvd it has kinda 15-20 library rpms can i just give pc the task of automatically installing them without me clicking at each and every one of them? and since its a complete distribution , pc could search for dependencies on its own?

5)I have a smartphone how can i syncronize it with my linux system /?its windows ce powered and its IMATE's SMARTPHONE 2
6)is it possible for wine or any other programme to stimulate a windows (operating system environment as a whole/???)

Congratulations on dumping windows.

1) I have wine but it doesnot run any executible file of windows (even those files which i was successfullly ran on suse 9.2)
(i downloaded wine via apt-get)

We Need some output from the console when you run the application. Each app tends to give different errors and need different steps to fix. Run it in the console to get full output. Try run one of the builtin wine apps first "wine regedit32"

I had this, caused by having ati graphics card with framebuffer/vga drivers built into the kernel. I recompiled my kernel and removed framebuffer support and it no longer hangs. I also get this happening occasionally if wine is having issues with a directx application. Either the ati drivers or what wine is asking of them seems to be causing the issue.

4) I have dialup and so i install some programmes from suse9.2 dvd it has kinda 15-20 library rpms can i just give pc the task of automatically installing them without me clicking at each and every one of them? and since its a complete distribution , pc could search for dependencies on its own?

sorry I don't understand the question

6)is it possible for wine or any other programme to stimulate a windows (operating system environment as a whole/???)

Thats what vmware/bochs/qemu do. Vmware cost money, the other 2 are open source.

Vmplayer is free.

You listed several distros which one are you actually trying to use?

PCLinuxOS has its own forum at http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php
I had a simliar problem in PCLOS check the forum or the wiki for the answer.

Try using winetools to setup wine, makes things easier.

4: I don't know if that version of SuSE had a set up for rpms that was similar to Debian's apt-get utility (apt-rpm, or something). The last version of SuSE I used was 8.2, and at that time it did not. I think newer versions of SuSE do. When I Googled it, I found Links on SuSE package management, where, under APT, it mentioned that APT is included in SuSE 10. There may have been an early attempt at apt4rpm back on SuSE 9.2, but I couldn't find anything about it.
If you're talking about automatic updates, I think SuSE has always had a good utility known as YUM (Yast Update Manager). YaST always worked pretty well, and likely now (in recent SuSE releases) accomplishes everything that apt does.

3: Just to add to my previous answer, aciprip is great for converting dvds into avi files. Also, if you're looking to simply copy dvds, k9copy is good.

Did you set wine up? You have to set it up not just install it.

I suggest using WineTools to set it up as it will also help you install other necessary windows apps like IE6.
