jpg optimizer in linux?

I have jpg photos to put on a website that are each slightly over 1MB and need to be compressed for faster downloading. If somebody could recommend a good program, it would be appreciated.

Did you try The Gimp?. You could always make thumbnails of your pictures and tell the visitors the size of the picture in width and height and the size of the in kb before they download it to "preview" if the image is worth to download . I prefer sites like that

Even if they are thumbnailed, I would want to compress these photos from 1MB to maybe around 150KB. I will try the gimp now.

thanks for the recommendation. that was easy.

for anybody in the future if they have same problem, I saved my jpg files with different names, which opened a new box of options, where I clicked optimize, changed the quality to 50% (roughly) for compression and chose progressive. it was easy and turned 1.2MB files into 150KB, probably could have done better but that's enough for me.
