Unhappy JDBC and Open Office 2.0

Has anyone had any success with this combination? I'm trying to add records to a MySQL server over the internet with Open Office 2.0.3 and JDBC 3.1.13 using Slackware 10.2. The connection is tenuous at best, and seems to let go with little or no provocation. Does anything have to be configured on the server side to accept JDBC connections? If there is no explanation, then I will be better off using a different distro just for the gui tools offered by MySQL AB. The query browser works like a charm on UBUNTU and seems much more stable than this Open Office arrangement. Maybe I'll have to run UBUNTU for that purpose only... Opinions, anyone?

Thumbs up Ubuntu works well

Yes, Ubuntu works well with the MySQL gui tools. Once you open up the universe repository, it installs very easily with no dependency issues. Slackware and Ubuntu on the same machine works fine, so long as you install Slackware first. The Ubuntu installer will detect and set up grub to boot Slackware automatically, but not the other way around. I think dual booting Slack and Ubuntu is a winning combo! No help needed now. Just thought someone might find this info useful.
