java vm

My system:

Red hat 9
amd athlon 1700
512 ram

Anyways Ive wanted to install LimeWire, and when I do it says I need to have java vm installed on this machine.

Now Ive installed j2re1.4.2_04, j2re1.4.2_05, and jdk1.5.0
after which Ive gone into my mozilla browser into preferances and enabled java.
The I check the plugins installed and it doesnt show up.

What am I doing wrong? Has anyone else had these problems?

Also in my desperate try to install java and get it up and running I accidently deleted the folder j2re1.4.2_05. I used the command
Code:
 rpm -rebuilddb j2re1.4.2_05
That brought back my java folder but the files that were in the j2re1.4.2_05 folder are still missing and only contain files such as java.1 keytool.1 rmid.1 rmirregistry.1 tnameserv.1
Ive tried to uninstall the j2re1.4.2_05 rpm but it still says it does not exsist.aarrgghh

Has anyone else had these problems? *EVERYONE* has had problmes installing limewire. or at least it seems so. I hate to sound negative, but i'd really recommend just giving up and using a better client like http://gtk-gnutella.sf.net or http://qtella.net if you want a pure gnutella client. if you want a client that can do gnutella, kazaa, napster, openft and more... http://gift.sf.net

it's not bad at all, it's just that limewire is so often the first thing that new linux users try to use that's written in java. I assume i's because it's also on windows hence the java codebase. once you're more familiar with linux i'm sure you'll ahve no trouble installing java, but it's a complication that can all too easily make people hate linux, when they could have just ignored it by uising native applications. if you do wish to persue it, then there is a lot of posts about it around here... certainly don't let me put you off if you don't want to be, just easier to not try, and save a bunch of headaches!
