Java SDK & JRE Install

I have Ubuntu and can't ahold of an *.deb for the installation.

I've extracted the directories out of the JRE and JDK and placed both folders in /usr/java/jdk* and /usr/java/jre*

What are the appropriate classpaths and what is the name of the variable and how do I set them?

I looked online and most of them dealt with windows and didn't work. The ones for linux, I tried and ..I couldn't compile a simple hello world.

My IDE is Netbeans and everything fine in there, except it crashes with libfontmanager.so.
