Angry Java install

I download Java and put it on my desktop.

I try to put things in the command line to no avail.

I try clicking on it.

Maybe I dont' understand the directions, but nothing seems to work.

I'm running Mandrake 8.2.

Hi,

What Java did you download? Did you download the RPM from Sun?

Did you install the download?

If you did, did you add the directories where it installed the binaries to your path?

Sorry to drown you in questions, but I'm sure we at LQ can help, it seems simple enough, we just need more information!

I downloaded it from Sun. I haven't been able tp install the download because I have no idea what I'm supposed to run with file with. The icon shows a white page with a little black TV Screen on it. Wish I knew what it wanted. That's as far as I got. Stupid rpm.

What is the suffix on the file?(i.e. .rpm,.bin,.tgz) The last time I downloaded the java package from sun I believe it was j2sdk.rpm.bin . Something like that. Anyway if that is the case you can do this:

chmod u+x j2sdk*
./j2sdk*
rpm -ivh j2sdk*.rpm

I think that will do the trick.
