Japanese Text Editor

All,
I'm learning the Japanese language and I would like to have an editor that will allow me to type using Kana characters. I've downloaded GEdit (which has support for Japanese) but I don't know how to turn on support for Japanese. Does anyone know how to have GEdit use the Kana for typing? Or is there a better option out there?

Thanks for any advice,
jpbarto
