Japanese input in RHEL AS4

Does anyone know how to get japanese input working when it wasn't selected during the install? So far every program I have tried (im-ja, kinput2, iiim, scim) has not worked. Most of them tell me to use shft+space to enter hiragana mode, but all shft+space does is enter a space.
