Jagged Xine Subtitles

I'm struggling with configuring the Xine subtitle fonts. Regardless of what I manually enter in my .xine/config file, the subtitle font is always the same. Further, the fonts are jagged as can be seen here:

Subtitle Example

There are several font entries in the config file. For subtitles.separate.font I tried serif but no change.

I have a collection of True Type fonts installed and I long ago recompiled FreeType with the ByteCode Interpreter enabled. I recompiled xine-libs with the --enable-antialiasing, --with-freetype, and --with-fontconfig options. I enabled subtitles.separate.font_freetype: arial and subtitles.separate.font_use_freetype:1. No change. Same jagged subtitle fonts all the time.

This is on Slackware 12.1 with xine-ui 0.99.5 and xine-libs 1.1.11.1. xine-ui is compiled with --enable-xft.

Thanks for any help.
