jack and alsa problem

Hi,
I'm running Mandriva 2006 and I'm runnning into some problems when trying to start the jack daemon. Here is the message:

[alanm@localhost ~]$ jackd -R -dalsa
jackd 0.100.1
Copyright 2001-2005 Paul Davis and others.
jackd comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY
This is free software, and you are welcome to redistribute it
under certain conditions; see the file COPYING for details

JACK compiled with System V SHM support.
cannot lock down memory for jackd (Cannot allocate memory)
loading driver ..
creating alsa driver ... hw:0|hw:0|1024|2|48000|0|0|nomon|swmeter|-|32bit
control device hw:0
control open "hw:0" (No such file or directory)
cannot load driver module alsa
Segmentation fault

I am running VMware but it passes my soundcard through and when I look it up in the hardware manager it shows I'm running the correct ALSA drivers.

Any Ideas?
-Alan

don't know why your card is not designated hw:0 but you can change it like
-dalsa -dhw:1
or whatever it's designated there where you are
look in /proc/devices
should be a bunch of designations like
[0- 0]: ctl
i guess if it's hw:1 that wold be
[1- 0]: ctl
not sure

they just get labeled in the order they get detected at boot
the kernel can even have a "dummy" set to take up 0
once after a bad configuation of the kernel my soundcard was hw:3
