Question J2R on Debian

I am running Debian Etch and need to get Java 2 Runtime environment on my computer. It is not in the synaptic package manager, and when I download the files for it, it comes up with dependencies I don't know where to get. How can I have it install everything else I need to get J2R working?

If it's not in Synaptic, it's because you're not including contrib and non-free in your sources.list

how do I change that, and is the "non-free" something that has to be paid for? I just switched from CentOS...
