It started with gaim....

Hello,im a total linux newbie, and this looked like the right place to post my MAJOR (well,it is major for me) problem.

I wanted to install gaim, thats very nice and all but it gave me this error, while i was trying to install it using an rpm.

Some package requested cannot be installed:
gaim-1.3.1-0.mdk10.0.i586 (due to unsatisfied libplds4.so)
do you agree ?

After a quick google search i found i needed to install an app called GTK something.

So,i downloaded it,and followed the instructions to install it!

these are the commands i used to install it:

[root@localhost GTK]# ./configure
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for gawk... gawk
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes
checking for style of include used by make... GNU
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cl... no
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
See `config.log' for more details.

Once again i googled "C compiler for Mandrake 10.1" and it returned some search results.

i downloaded the following rpm : gcc-3.3.2-9mdk.i586.rpm

but,it gave another error:

Some package requested cannot be installed:
gaim-1.3.1-0.mdk10.0.i586 (due to unsatisfied libplds4.so)
do you agree ?

For the last time i returned to the almighty google, but it couldnt help me any further.
I found the GCC thingy link on this forums,so i hope u guys can help me out!!

I use Mandrake Linux 10.1 (i only used CD1.cd 2 and cd3 are missing,lol)

cheers,
-Brian

You should try installing it using Mandrakes built-in software manager, urpmi.
To do so, type
Code:
urpmi gaim
Please see this post for a very good tutorial.

You could download the package from http://www.linuxpackages.net or from slackware.com.

Install it with installpkg or pkgtool or some other utility that you're familiar with. If you aren't familiar with any, this would be a good time to learn the different ways packages can be installed. Don't believe everything you read about swaret; it's a good thing.

You could also download the source from gaim.sourceforge.net and learn how to compile the source and install it that way. I'd suggest checkinstall for creating and installing your own packages.

Happy learning!
