ISO files
 

Now, please take into account that I'm a complete Linux neibie but I think I've screwed up my Linux CD burning. I know this probably sounds really dumb.

I downloaded the 3 cd's worth of Mandrake 8.1 then burnt each one onto a separate CD. Now I've tried booting from the first CD (I've even tried using a windows boot disc!!)

I think the problem maybe that the file on the first cd has 2 suffixes .i586 then .iso

Is there any way to rescue these discs?

the files you'ev downloaded are CD images, not exectuable files. You need to burn the file as image, not as a normal file.

You ever done disc to disc copies with just one drive? know how it copies the cd onto your hard disk first.. well thats what you've got, and exactly what you're meant to have.

if you use Nero, go File Burn Image, and chaneg the default filetype to *.*, then select the iso file. Similar thing in any other burn program.

Once that's done,it WILL burn fine.

Incidentally, the i586 suffix simply defines the standard architecture that the distrobution is compiled for.

Incidentely, some older versions of Nero you may have to specify a block-size of 2048. If you're using Easy CD Creator, just click file > create cd from image > a 'open file...' dialog box appears, select the file-type as '.ISO generic' and select the appropriate file. Do not change the settings (such as leaving sessions open, etc) and just burn. If you have the option for Buffer Under RuN protection (eg BURN Proof) then you may want to enable it.

I guessed the 586 refered to the pentium type CPU but wasn't sure about 2 suffixes

hello... sorry to resurect an old thread, but ive got a small question...

im running windows but im on the long slow road to downloading and installing Fedora..
i have the .iso image of thje first disk.. is there a windows program that can do the checksum so i can crossrefrence it with the MD5SUM beafore i create 3 new beermats?

Ok.. so the only image I'll need to burn is the ISo... not the ASC or MD 5 files... what are those guys anyway ?


I have a slackware-10.0-install-install-d1.iso and several other files. frankly i don't know what the hell I'm doing here.

There seem to be three install disks - d1, d2 and d3 with and ISO, ASC and MD5 files in each set.

Suggestions? No,directions please.

ISO > is the disk image
MD5 > is a iddy biddy file with a 'checksum' (so you can make sure your ISO isnt corrupt)
ASC > eeoeoooohhhh? never herd of one.. sorry :P

Be careful! you cant just stick the iso on a disk and burn it....
you need to write it to the disk as an image
...
poke about in your cd writer software.... it should give you more info

The *.asc files are the PGP signatures for the images. Just another way to verify that the files are what they're supposed to be.
