I have been using Evolution ever since RedHat introduced it in its distro(s). I wanted to install Evolution on Slackware 10. Then had a change of mind/heart and decided to checkout ThunderBird.

Thunderbird is many times lighter when compared to Evolution.

It could do almost everything that Evolution can do with mails. What I really miss is the Summary page of Evolution - the XML Feeds that update me with BugTraqs, Fedora Updates, LinuxToday, etc. Weather ... LQ RSS Feeds (soon).

For XML (RSS) news feed, I installed the ForumZilla. Tried the FedoraUpdates XML Feed from FedoraNews... I don't have any control over how many items I want to restrict the download to.

The list of extensions is pretty impressive. They have a Weather extension too - but restricted to US Zip codes.

So, there is my initial impression/comparison. I am being tempted to replace Evolution with ThunderBird on my Fedora installations too.

Would like to see the thoughts/impressions of other ThunderBird/Evolution users.

I like Thunderbird much better than any other email client. One thing it has that Evolution, Kmail, etc. have always lacked is a keyboard shortcut/icon to go to the next message when you have opened a message in its own window. I don't know why the others lack something so basic.

I use Thunderbird too. I just wish it wasn't so slow :-/

I couldn't use Evolution as it has no Bayesian junk mail filter. Thunderbird is excellent.

Any further comparisons - for / against Thunderbird???

as i am new to the *nix world, i have only just discovered Thunderbird less then a month ago. i have to say coming from the M$ world of outlook and outlook express Thunderbid is by far better then anything i am used to.

i use it with a IMAP setting not the POP as is standard with most mail servers, but oh well.

one complaint i do have is its inability to alow more then one type of SMTP traffic or server. if you add e-mail clients you can not say this client uses this server for SMTP, and this one uses an other. are there any client programs out there that are a secure as thunderbird that alow that and have good IMAP controls for SSH and SSL?

I am looking for a method to import mails/messages from Evolution into Thunderbird.

I am using Thunderbird and I am really pleased with it.

I am new to *nix world, I am using Mandrake 10 in a M$ domain, I connect via IMAP and SMTP. It works well. I do have a problem accessing Public Folders on M$ Exchange server (if any one has had some experience with connection to M$ Exchange I would appreciate some advice).

Evolution seemed to me too similar to Outlook, I found it slow and had a few bugs. Much like Outlook.

Incidentally does any one know how to export a M$ Outlook .pst file to a format that can be imported by most *nix mail clients? I have attempted to export to Outlook Express and then export from that application, but I had no luck.

I think I will stick with Thunderbird, it is a very good app just like Fireffox

I'm a Linux newbie too, but I think I can answer your question on exporting mail (this will be cool if I can pull this off)!

I used a nice peice of software called Outport to convert outlook emails, but also in outlook express, you can drag the emails from teh client to a empty dir and it create plain text emails which Kmail will read, wicked.

I wanted to use evoluation, but I couln't get my address book to import, so I've ended up using Kmail which I found a pain to configure (a field in the setup called "name" which really means "email address" doeesn't help!).

There is a way in Thunderbird to use different SMTP servers for different accounts. It is under Options/Account settings. I think the point is called Advanced (Sorry, I'm at work right now and we use Outlook instead of Thunderbird). You can add as much SMTP servers as you want there. After that you can/have to assign them to the different accounts (don't know which point that was in the Account settings, I think it was the first one for each account). You can also switch between different SMTP servers when writing a mail via the select box in the new mail window.
