is this how I patch a source directory?

I need to patch the source of glibc-2.3.2 with this patch, glibc-2.3.2-sscanf-1.patch. I am following the LFS book(I placed it in this forum because it is more of a general question about patching then LFS) The book gives me this command to do
Code:
patch -Np1 -i ../glibc-2.3.2-sscanf-1.patch
this does not make sence to me. I read man patch and it gave the syntax
Quote:
SYNOPSIS
patch [options] [originalfile [patchfile]]

but usually just

patch -pnum <patchfile
Am I supposed to move the patch into my directory glibc-2.3.2 then run this command from within the directory
Code:
patch -Np1 -i glibc-2.3.2-sscanf-1.patch

Have the patch in the same directory that the glibc-2.3.2 folder is in. The ../ means "go up one level", so if I'm in /home/andy and I enter ../ and press enter it will take me up into the home folder. If I did it again I'd be in root. The book assumes that you have all the sources and patches in the same folder. At the start of each page it assumes you unpack whatever it is and cd into the folder and then start executing the commands. Follow the book. Linux from Scratch is just the begining. It's Beyond Linux from Scratch where it gets hard as you have to work at the command prompt for a while without copy and paste. Good luck.
