I would recommend to ask for help from the technical staff at your school.

I think TobiSGD may be right here. It is looking suspiciously like you your connections are being closed because of some server side configuration. Perhaps the the server's /etc/hosts.deny is set up to block some range of incoming IPs.

your probiably right some of the students were connecting to the server from home but heres a confusing fact

when i ran
Code:
ssh alopez44@tamucc.edu
it connected with no hassle
but that doesn't explain why i was able to access the tamucc.edu domain name without hassle and not able to access penguin.tamucc.edu this might mean that the server might not be setup to reject incoming ip addresses of a certain range (unless tamucc.edu and penguin.tamucc.edu are 2 different servers)

heres the verbose of the command
Code:
baronobeefdip@baronobeefdip-desktop:~$ ssh alopez@tamucc.edu
The authenticity of host 'tamucc.edu (165.95.8.16)' can't be established.
RSA key fingerprint is 16:d4:91:76:f5:4f:39:c8:0f:3e:1b:0c:58:29:e7:1b.
Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? yes
Warning: Permanently added 'tamucc.edu,165.95.8.16' (RSA) to the list of known hosts.

this is very interesting but how were you able to get into the server, did you type penguin.tamucc.edu and not just tamucc.edu?

Both work for me. The Texas A&M message only appears for tamucc.edu and not penguin.tamucc.edu

The appear to be completely different machines. Different IPs and different RSA public keys.

Can you please try again after moving your .ssh directory out of the way?
EG.
Code:
mv ~/.ssh ~/.ssh.back
ssh -v alopez44@penguin.tamucc.edu

how were you able to get through during this post i am assuming that they set it up to reject ip addresses outside the lan but how did you manage to access it outside of it (unless your attending the school i am)

Your assumption is demonstrably false. I could connect from outside their lan.

Please ask your sysadmin. I can't know what IP ranges they are allowing and which ones they aren't.
