Is there a "working" GUI Front End for LVM +?
HI Tuxites Old and New,
Does anyone have up and running in their FC 3 Distro, a GUI Front End to the Linux LVM Program.
Better still....... a GUI based COMPLETE, FREE, (Open Source) be all and end all PM Clone ...
being a program that will allow us to mount, and unmount, resize, repartition, partition, image, add, remove, ............ drives, partitions, virtual drives, etc.etc.
We ARE living in the "2000's," aren't we ????
We gave away text based anything, when full operational GUI's of Alternative OS's began to appear in the 1990's. Under this roof,,,, way back when we cut our eye teeth on haveing to do Linux Kernel rebuilds on the fly knowing both our Hardware and Software, back then.
This is the NOW !!
ABOUT LINUX LVM.
Linux LVM is also so "unfriendly," and although we "are" very new to the Linux Virtual Drive thingo' apparently Linux LVM, doesn't even see the WHOLE "Physical Drive, and or Drives" so it's pretty much as useful, as tit's on a bull !!!
Lets hope that after the sin's of the past the "new" LVM in fedora 4 Core is a dream to use AND GUI based !!!
HIDDEN LINUX TRUTHS.
When any user finally finds some of the hidden "Linux Truth's" (inc any Linux Distro) aka Linux groooooooows ever bigger in "sizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzze >>>>> bigger and bigger, "remaining space" quickly becomeing a "dirty word. " The hunt for storage solutions and or space solutions, physical or quasie is on for good and old.
VMware's M$$$$$$$$$$ SOLUTION.
A perfect example is the super excellent Windozzzzze Solution ....
VMWare's prior named VMView now simply known as Workstation Ver X.xx it uses "Virtual Drives" that "still" take up Physical Disk Drive Space on a Linux Partitioned Work Space as a file. BUT it does have sooooooo many options for the many. (And yes it "IS" a Commercial Program - you have to pay big dollars to own a copy. Unfortunately there is nothing that is FREE Open Source equivelant available (at this time)")
You don't need many 2 - 4 - 6 - 8 -10 - 20 - 40 +++ GIG Virtual Partitions to eat away at what you "though" was "plenty" of HDD space with 4 x 80 gig Seagate SATA Drives.
And that's with just one M$$ OS ...in our case win2k pro installed into the VM (Software PC) !
If you "still" have a need for a text based M $ Dos or a clone of it, plus, a need for a further Linux Flavour distro ...... just to give you online Disk Management Capabilities aka Suse's reasonable YAST Disk Management System. (Where the GUI Disk Druid in the Anaconda disappeared to insted of also being a tool on one of our Fedora Core 3 menus post the install we will never know) Storage for either "TONNAGE" of Video and or Music Files, large Spreadsheets and or Databases......
Holy cow you can forget 80 gig HDD's pretty quckly !!!
Not forgetting as a tail end charlie........ backing up everything on other partitions as a cheap down and get dirty solution to very very expensive dat drives and media !!
Over the last few months I have spent my days and nights pulling down so called solutions that are supposed to all work under any Linux Distro as HDD Management Programs.
EITHER Fedora Core has strayed away from earlier Files System Tree standards, "or" some how /usr/scr isn't being used anymore. Library's became a never ending problem, we had to go scouring and googleing for non existing (on our distro install) all sorts of files. SOME of which were incompatible versions (when we did download them). It was and still "IS" a b#@&%y nightmare, no b#@&%y good, and not b#@&%y well acceptable !!
The one issue that gripes us about any of theprio Fedora Core offerings is that the next version has the self same major missing features, Although it's bigger brother RH Enterprie Server OS's and RH Pro Versions X.xx are no different !!!!!
The Fedora Consortia had better realize that leaving behind installed bases of Fedora Core 1, Fedora Core 2, Fedora Core 3 without the Consortia proving any relief to end users who migrate from M$$$$ OS Products who by the way already have GUI interfaces to important tools, utilities, programs and tools, is going to have them sooner or later say NO in a big way to taking another step to yet another Fedora version distro !!!!
Perhaps even more disheartening no trying some other flavor of Linux Distro.
Perhaps we also better clarify something we go right way back when RH (RED HAT ) was beginning "TEXT BASED INSTALLS." S o we are definitely "not" newbie's to RH or Linux !!
It is "NOT" GOOD ENOUGH ... when there are "NO" easy solutions for end users of "ANY" LINUX DISTRO,,, for anyone to say ..... go buy (at any level of $$$ expense) a commercial Linux Program, Utility, Tool, and or Software Program Alternative.
OPEN SOURCE IS FREE AND NEEDS TO EVER STAY FREE !!!!
That includes ...... ALL OF THE FOLLOWING :
THE OS ITSELF
ALL SOFTWARE PROGRAMS THAT ARE COMPATIBLE WITH IT
ALL UTILITIES THAT ARE COMPATIBLE WITH IT
ALL TOOLS THAT ARE COMPATIBLE WITH IT
ALL DEVICE DRIVERS ARE COMPATIBLE WITH IT
ALL DOCUMENTATION THAT PERTAINS TO ALL OF THE PRIOR.
THE SOURCE CODE ARE COMPATIBLE WITH THE ABOVE AND PERTAINS TO THE ABOVE
We who are TUX USERS (Tux is the super friendly Linux Mascot) need to become fiercely protective of that which we already have. We all need to get toastin' and roastin', a complete set of CD rom disks and give away a set per day if possible per week or per month if we arwe financially strapped to our friends. With no disrespect to RH or Fedora. There is a 3 (three) version of Koppernix floating around of PC Magazines that is Self Booting and is extensive and does not need to be installed on a HDD. It could be a very cost effective way to spread the Linux Tux Life....... and extend our Linux User Base....
What say you good Tuxite's ??
For that matter and SINGLE CD Distro of Linux !!
Do it now...... before they make a law against it !!! You mightn't't have time tomorrow !
REMEMBER : Always remember "LIFE" ....... is a learning experience.
A FINAL PLUG.
Doesn't the full sources for everything involved with each Fedora Core Version exist for any code writer to download from many world wide repositories ????????
Isn't there anyone capable of reverse engineering the Anaconda Installer, taking out the GUI Disk Druid HDD Management part of the code do some additional widgets for MANUAL Mount and Unmount of partitions other than boot. a WRITE Widget and a little code ( to write the changed partiton table / tables to disk)
That would be reasonably simple to those who are source code programmers !!!
Give us control please !!!
GUI Hard Drive and Partition Management INC LVM ........... MUST BE A PRIORITY !!!
AND .... for god sake make the thing right click package installer ...installable please ... no chasing after lib's etc ...please !!!!
love and regards to all,
Tux - Linux Forever !
a ps on this topic
Hi again folks,
We are trialing, QTParted as a "part only, part solution," it doesn't seem to natively support LVM. We are also trialing Bootit NG. Bootit NG requires a boot disk at boot time access to it's own utilitys, but the project's own web site is rather disheartning.
Unfortunately I only had time to just briefly glance at Bootit and I'm not sure it even deals with Linux LVD,,,,,, and or Virtual Drives. We may use one of these utilities as a last ditch part option only.
How about :
