Disk encryption software

I am planning to install Linux on my laptop, but I am not comfortable of running my laptop without a disk encryption software such as PC Guardians. currently i am using CompuSec, but it won't work in Linux.

In case you wonder what i have on my disk, mostly me and gf and stuff. *smile.

Have a look at [1]. Works like a charm. Some distributions even bring along their own means of disk encryption.

If you need a portable encryption that you can use both in Linux and in Windows you should have a look at [2].

The last July Issue of Linux Gazette had two articles on encryption. I think it would be better to just encrypt your /home partition.

If your kernel supports it, I had to recompile my own, you can use AES-loop encryption. I haven't used the other forms of encryption so I couldn't say how well they work, but I made a script for my live cd that would encrypt the swap, root and home partitions and create an decryption boot disc.

AES-loop encryption seemed to run quite well and I couldn't notice any real performance issuies with it

Or dm-crypt and it looks like there is a software for reading it from windows but haven't tried it.
I'm using dm-crypt since maybe 2 years, never had a problem. Half of my disk is encrypted, all my personnal datas go there. Performance can be an issue but I haven't really benchmarked it.

The TrueCrypt does not work because it does not encrypt a whole disk or the boot partition.

because Windows keep admin password in the boot partition.

You could try compusec (http://www.ce-infosys.com/english/index.html). However, I have never used it myself (neither windows nor Linux) so I can't say much to it. It used to have the reputation of being pretty unreliable.

In Linux I'd really recommend to use dm_crypt for disk encryption.

Edit: Oh, in case you try compusec, please share your experience. I'd be interested to know

I'm also working on some options for the installation to either store the encryptions keys and related files on the cd, or upload/download from an ssh server.
