is there a way to find out who executed a program?

Hi... I'm kinda new to linux and was wondering if there is there a way to find out what executed a program from system logs??? I'm trying to figure out who executed gzip and what time they did it at.

Thanks

The only way I know to accomplish that is to use system wide accounting, which is normally not turned on. It was originally developed for sites that share one computer but many customers. You can tell who did what, but I'm not sure if it tells you when they did it.
