Is there a simple utility that can stitch multiple images into one?

I have maps scanned as 200x200 gifs. I would like to be able to stich these together automatically (through a script) to print out specific areas (like where I'm going hill walking!). Can I do this without having to paste them individually into gimp?

Take a look at ImageMagick. One of the command-line utilities it provides is called “compose”, and I think it does what you're asking for.

Update - Seems to be 'composite' rather than 'compose', but I think it may do what I want - thanks again...!
