Is there a linux equivilant to PHOTOSHOP?
Hi,
Just started using linux in a dual boot system - working very well really impressed with it thus far. Was wondering if anyone knew of a photoshop like software package available on linux and where I would get it from. Many thanx... |

Here are some good beginners tutorials for The Gimp:
http://tigert.gimp.org/gimp/tutorials/ I was used to have photoshop to create textures for my games. The Gimp was a total replacement of Photoshop for me :) |
I think it's better than Photoshop but that's just my opinion.

I'm with you Muddy ;).

The major complaint about The GIMP is that it uses a somewhat non-standard interface. There are many different windows for all your different functions and whatnot instead of a more familiar all-in-one approach. Some people prefer the photoshop interface as it is more like the interfaces they already know. The GIMP also is in need rgb->cmyk features that are present in photoshop. Proper CMYK is needed for The GIMP to be a replacement for PS in print work. As it is now The GIMP is just as good, if not better than PS in functionality in all areas except being able to be used for print work in which proper RGB > CMYK is needed. For web graphics or your standard photoshop work it is more than up to the task.

You could always try and figure out Wine, and you can run a copy of photoshop right on your linux machine. I had bad luck with older copies of wine, but the newer ones worked no problem for me. I like the Gimp, but after 4 years of using Photoshop, it is just more realistic for me to run it, instead of Gimp.

The Gimp is The Devil. This is based soley upon my own dealings with the monster. I weep for Photoshop :(

Well, that's true what Read_Icculus said. You have to definitely create a workspace to work only with The Gimp. If you mix it with other programs while you are working in the same worksapce (such as mp3 players) and do an "alt + tab" to switch program you will switch to another open part of The Gimp. It's hard to explain if you've never tried Gimp, but try and you will see ;). Other then that I really consider it as a quality program and strange it's still is keep free :). Same goes to Blender3D, a cool modeler multiplatform, free and if you find a modeler with that quality and so small (around 2megas, including renders and a game engine up to 2.25 version )for any other system please tell me :D

The GIMP is well worth a look.
