Is there a desktop environment w/ an embedded console?

This is something I've been wondering about for a while now..

Is there a desktop program that has a console/command line embedded right on the desktop?
Like, as though there were a borderless console open all the time that covered the entire desktop, but was in the background unless active?

Just curious, it's a kind of setup I'd like to try. I think it would be super-handy.

Thanks,

AdamG

Can you resize a console and use transparency settings to allow that type of thing? (never tried it myself, my machine is pretty old and probably wouldn't handle transparency very well)

Yes I did this with eterm long ago. it works well. Figure out the command switches for borderless and transparent then run that on the start of your desktop. Like putting a script in ~/.kde/Autostart/

Ditto to the above and use soemthing like Devil's Pie to ensure it's always behind the other windows. I don't think it would be as handy as it seems in theory though.

About all I found it useful for was tailing logs or watching irc. Really it's just eyecandy. But as a starter try this --

Eterm -O -x

You will also need to figue out your WM settings to put it always in background. It makes for nice screenshots atleast.
