Through a distro-specific repository of software packages. How you install them depends on what distribution you're using, which you haven't specified.
which linux distro are you using. Coz different Distros have different installation programs. i personally use Ubuntu which is part of the Debian familly. in Ubuntu you can use aptitude apt-get install <packagename> or dpkg -i <packagename>.
Distribution: Slackware (mainly) and then a lot of others...

1> What softwares do you want to install. This is the most important question that needs to be asked here.
2> If you want to look at your partitions (hoping you are not not talking about a different physical drive here) you would have to execute 'fdisk -l'
Also it would be great if we knew whatdistro you are using. Actually a lot depends on it.
Hope this helps.
Distribution: Ubuntu 11.4,DD-WRT micro plus ssh,lfs-6.6,Fedora 15,Fedora 16

disk drives? fdisk -l
