Linux is not Windows

Through a distro-specific repository of software packages. How you install them depends on what distribution you're using, which you haven't specified.

Smile installation on linux systems

which linux distro are you using. Coz different Distros have different installation programs. i personally use Ubuntu which is part of the Debian familly. in Ubuntu you can use aptitude apt-get install <packagename> or dpkg -i <packagename>.

@OP
1> What softwares do you want to install. This is the most important question that needs to be asked here.
2> If you want to look at your partitions (hoping you are not not talking about a different physical drive here) you would have to execute 'fdisk -l'
Also it would be great if we knew whatdistro you are using. Actually a lot depends on it.
Hope this helps.

disk drives? fdisk -l
install software? most big distributions have software repositories similar to an 'app store', from were all software is downloaded and installed, though some software (mostly proprietary software) is installed from a .run file, which works similarly to a .exe installer on windows (though this isn't common.. yet)
