Unhappy Is the problem exactly hardware or software related?

I have an AMD 64 2800+ processor with 512 mb ram and an old 20 gb hdd with a new 80 gb hdd. Windows XP is installed on the 80 gb one. I tried installing Red Hat Linux 9 in the old hdd after formatting with the installation cd. Installation went on fine but on booting the message shows grub loading and then all there is a black screen with a blinking cursor. The installation cd had specified pentium processor 200 Mhz or higher. Is the problem hardware related ?

I reinstalled this time postponing the configuration of the x server. This time the grub loaded successfully but while selecting linux the following messaged "kernel attempted to kill init". same message on trying to use the boot disk.

It is probably a misconfiguration of the bootloader, grub in your case. A hardware issue is quite unlikely, as it wouldn't have installed at all in that case. Check your bootloader configuration, make sure you have the entries pointing to the right partitions, partition is bootable etc.
